Stitching Together a Better Future !
A Community Hangs by a Thread !
The isolated island of El-Warraq is one of the poorest communities in Egypt with the average family surviving on only $86 per month.
Contributing to this problem is a 90% unemployment rate among women, almost all of whom are illiterate. With few skills and limited
opportunities, even moving away from the island is not an option for many. The SIFE team in Egypt understood the only
barrier preventing these women from earning an income was a lack of practical skills, so they designed a plan to teach them sewing skills that
would transform the unemployed women into skilled workers.
Splitting the Seams of Unemployment
The SIFE team’s first step was to find a location where they could teach the women how to operate sewing machines. A local nonprofit
organization called the Egyptian Association for Development (EAD) had some unused space at its storage facility, and the organization agreed
to lend it to the team to establish a training center. Next, the team recruited a local professional trainer who understood life on El-Warraq Island
and could teach sewing methods to the women. Finally, the EAD helped the SIFE students select 25 women from the island for the advanced
sewing courses which were conducted with 12 sewing machines purchased by the team.
Reaping What They Sew
After just four months of training courses, the 25 participants produced a total of 132 sewn garments worth $870 and were now qualified to
either find a job in the textile industry or work independently. The SIFE team offered to loan the 12 most successful trainees the sewing machines,
which they agreed to repay with a percentage of their future sales. These women are now able to make an average of 15 sewn items a month,
earning up to $90, a value equivalent to the average family income on the island. The SIFE team is currently collecting the payments for the
loaned sewing machines and will reinvest the funds in new machines that will extend the project to a new class of trainees.
Economy on the Mend
With the establishment of the sewing center and the process in place to provide new sewing machines, this training is scheduled to continue
on El-Warraq Island at least through 2012. The SIFE team is now working to secure permanent distribution partners for the women to facilitate
their merchandise sales. To further address the island’s economic woes, the SIFE students have also implemented four other projects which are
increasing the number of economic opportunities and reducing the high unemployment rate in the area. By providing consulting services for
small businesses and job training for young adults and women, the SIFE team is helping individuals and families
improve their economic status and inspire an entire community.
